A technology-driven pathway to net-zero carbon emissions for China's cement industry

This paper aims to assess the emission reduction potential of combined mitigation technologies in China's cement industry, thus transitioning towards carbon neutrality through a suitable technology portfolio and exploring low-carbon pathway. The G-LEAP model is constructed for future projection, incorporating demand projection application. pathways based on different portfolios are developed estimate CO2 trajectory industry. We maximize utilization currently available assume high level innovative diffusion rate integrated pathway explore maximum abatement result shows that short-term mainly relies improving energy efficiency alternative fuels, which would contribute 9–12% 17–22% cumulative emissions compared frozen scenario. Alternative clinkers can significantly reduce process-related emissions, but determined by availability raw materials, 30–39% reduction. Post- oxygen-combustion capture expected be deployed 2030 about 28–44% 63–73% scenario, remainder 300–400 Mt 2060, will need technological innovation new growth horizons, such as sink approaches or trading.
